Medicare Knee Brace

Medicare Knee Brace

Apart from being the largest joint in the human body, the knee is also one of the most important. It is responsible for almost all lower limb movements. Therefore, a knee injury can result in a complete lack of mobility.

So yes, it is essential to pay attention to your knees and do everything you can to make sure they work properly. Sometimes, this can include getting a Medicare knee brace.

Knee braces are usually made of foam, cotton, and metal. They act as a support for an injured knee. They can also be used to prevent injury in sports players.

Although knee braces are important for resolving medical injuries, those that are medically recommended can be quite pricey. You might need some help to buy it or paying off the debt, which is where your medical insurance should kick in.

 Does Medicare cover knee braces?

Yes, it does. However, you will have to go to a Medicare-approved doctor to get your knee examined. Only when your doctor says that a knee brace is "medically-necessary" can your Medicare plan cover the cost.

Prescription knee braces are ”medically necessary” when:

  • The individual cannot walk.
  • The individual has recently had knee surgery.
  • The individual has had a recent knee injury.
  • The individual's knee requires stabilization due to deformity or weakness.

Medicare Part B will cover 80% of your knee brace's cost under its Durable Medical Equipment (DME) benefit. Durable here means it’s expected to last at least three years.

 Permitted Knee Braces

Will Medicare cover the purchase cost of your knee braces? Yes. But only if you get one of these four types.

  • Unloader or Off-Loader: This knee brace is typically recommended for people with osteoarthritis. It limits the knee movements, which takes the stress of the affected areas and reduces pain.

  • Rehabilitative: These braces have the function of allowing joint movement while protecting the knee post-surgery. They can also prevent knee injury. The rehabilitative function must be present for the medical brace coverage to apply.

  • Prophylactic: They’re usually acquired by athletes to protect the knee and prevent injury. They’re also worn to avoid further damage for those at risk.

  • Functional: When you get a functional brace, you provide support to an injured knee. They also work to provide a stabilizing effect to already injured knees.

 Important Things to Note

  • Braces are covered under the Original Medicare Plan and the Medicare Advantage. However, you have to purchase pain-relieving Medicare knee braces.

  • The Medicare plan covers the cost of either custom-fitted or off-the-shelf braces.

  • Your braces supplier has to be enrolled in Medicare and must be a participating supplier who accepts assignment. This will ensure that you don’t pay any extra charges.

  • Medicare Part B will only cover the most basic models of each brace. That is, it will only allow you to get the cheapest model. If you want an upgrade, you’re going to have to pay for it.

  • Make sure to get all your documents with the supplier in order. If you’re not sure what to do, your supplier should advise you.

If your Medicare-approved doctor has declared that your knee requires a knee brace, you need a reliable and registered supplier. Trust us to give you the best knee brace available for coverage.
