Addiction is a disease that rarely occurs on its own. Instead, substance abuse and subsequent addiction often occur alongside or partly because of an undiagnosed or untreated mental illness or mental health condition.

When addiction and mental health symptoms appear as comorbidity, they are called co-occurring disorders. Experiencing the effect of both addiction and mental illness can be alarming and difficult to understand at first.

As a result, many people struggling with addiction to drugs or alcohol overlook the fact that they may also be suffering from a mental illness like bipolar I disorder, bipolar II disorder, ADHD, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Without treating the underlying mental health condition as part of a dual disorder, it can be incredibly challenging for individuals to get sober and stay that way.

Only by addressing and treating the mental condition simultaneously with the substance use disorder can you effectively reduce the risk factors for relapse and continued substance abuse.
